Quick answer
Typestorm is a free browser-based typing-based space shooter inspired by ZType. Enemy ships carry falling words — type the letters of any word to shoot it down. Once you type a letter, that enemy is locked and you must finish typing its word before you can switch. Mistyping releases the lock. Letting a word reach the bottom costs a life. Three difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard) control word length and fall speed. Your score, best wave, words killed, WPM, and accuracy are tracked live. Best score and best WPM are saved to local storage.
About the game
Typestorm is a love letter to ZType and every typing tutor that tricked you into practicing by dressing up the drill as a game. Words fall, your ship shoots lasers with each correct keystroke, and the only input is your keyboard. It’s simultaneously a typing benchmark, a reflex drill, and a score-chase arcade game.
Tips
- Prioritize lower words. Any word within 70 pixels of the bottom is about to breach. Finish it before you start a new one.
- Lock before you panic. Typing the first letter of any word locks you to it — even a long word in the upper half is safer to start than a short word at the bottom that you might mistype.
- Don’t backspace. You can’t. Mistakes release your lock. Slow down for one keystroke instead of rushing.
- Learn the home row. WPM ceilings above ~60 are almost all a home-row story.
Scoring
Score per word = word.length × 10 × wave. Longer words in later waves pay the most, which rewards you for holding back on early waves to let words grow.
Controls
- A–Z — type the letters of a word to fire

Questions
How does Typestorm work? +
Enemy ships descend from the top of the screen, each carrying a word. Type any letter of any visible word and that enemy becomes 'locked' — you then have to finish typing its whole word before you can switch to another. Completing the word shoots the enemy down and earns you points proportional to the word length and current wave. Mistyping any letter releases your lock.
What's the difference between the three difficulties? +
Easy uses 3–5 letter common words at slower fall speed, perfect for new typists or players just learning the mechanics. Medium uses 5–7 letter words at moderate speed — the default tier. Hard uses 8–10 letter words at higher fall speed, meant for typists who can comfortably type 60+ WPM.
How is WPM measured? +
WPM (words per minute) is calculated live as the number of words you've successfully destroyed divided by the elapsed game time in minutes. Your highest WPM across sessions is saved separately from your highest score.
Is Typestorm free? +
Yes. Typestorm is 100% free in your browser with no sign-up, downloads, or ads during gameplay.
Does Typestorm save my progress? +
Your best score and best WPM are saved to your browser's local storage and persist between sessions on the same device.
What if two words start with the same letter? +
Typestorm avoids spawning words with duplicate first letters whenever possible. When it does happen, typing the shared letter locks onto the lowest enemy on screen (the most urgent threat) to keep the flow clean.
